MOST KIDS’ MINDS ARE LIKE SLIPPERY WALLS

In workshops I’ve found the following image to be very helpful in developing patience as a parent, which is essential to the process of changing kids’ unwanted behavior:

Picture your child’s mind to be a room with four slippery, bare walls. This is the state of kids’ attention span in our fast-paced world. Slippery walls also reflect the sense you probably have that no punishment or teaching seems to stick with your kids for long.

A whole lot is thrown up against that wall by you—encouragement, reward, punishment, lectures—and sadly, just about all of it slides down the wall and is quickly forgotten.

When you adopt a balance of classical consequences and instrumental rewards, somewhere along the way a moment of clear limits and acknowledging the good sticks to that bare, slippery wall, and they learn.

Then before long, another lesson catches the edge of that first one. Two things have stuck to your child’s developing brain. Now there’s enough to build on: past lessons that stop future lessons from sliding into oblivion.
